New year, new place
Decision 2011
Becky once again has forged the path, since she'll be starting her junior year there as well. There's a great possibility that we'll graduate the same year! Which is just wrong! Seriously though, it's okay, and even a little amusing. It just compounds the nontraditional approach I've taken in my education! At the same time, I know it makes it easier to be involved as a student having her in and social connections.
I feel so repetitive...school, school, school, work, work. Happily, I can add cycling and training to my activities, which will hopefully make things a little more interesting!
There's been so much movement in 2011...and we're barely into the third month! I feel really balanced at this point, a little too much work, but hey, I've got school to pay for now! Having three classes is very nice, even though biology takes a lot of studying and memorization. Work is exciting as I take on more with maintaining the property Twitter, enewsletter, and press releases. I'll be sad when I leave there. It is fun, complex, exhausting at times, and partially dysfunctional sometimes, but when it comes down to it, I like it. I still miss the park, but right now there are so many more learning opportunities at Highland Lake. I'm healthier, fitter, and progressing towards being at a competition level of fitness. Still a ways off, but heading the right direction!
Kyle is such an amazing support! Without him there's no way I'd be here, now, attaining one step at a time the dreams and goals that I've developed. It's enough to have his approval and pride at the end of a long day at work, after a hard test, and at the top of the evil mountain, reminding me that we're slowly attaining excellence and comfort in our life. Without that, I'd be half of who I am.

Sunday Ride
We sat by Lake Dense, talking about things, looking over the green lake and up the mountain, into the perfect blue sky. It was so peaceful, so invigorating to be in the middle of action, nature, and each other's company.
We left Lake Dense, heading towards the south end of the forest, then looping back over another mountain towards Lake Julia. This is were we started to feel it, but kept on, pushing towards the lake. More downhill (the reward for the burning legs and screaming lungs), and finally we reached the lake. There's something so peaceful about lakes anyway, and laying there, feeling the tension from gripping handlebars and legs pushing pedals slip away was almost magical.
Finally, we headed home. The return trip is always strange. On one hand, you have that motivation to get to the car, were you can sit and relax, and eventually get home to a meal and nap. One the other hand, your body has just about had it, and your muscles are so unhappy with you! But, the mental overcame the physical and we made it back to the truck rather quickly! At least, quicker than I expected!
One of the most exciting things to me was how much my fitness has improved from our last ride! I didn't give up, my lungs didn't hate me too often, and I put mental over physical. Plus, I got to spend all day ourside with my man!
We're already planning our next route for this coming weekend! And I think I'm getting Kyle excited about the thought of cross county or endurance racing in the future!

Yes, I'm Still Here
2011 has had an amazing start! I'm looking at which college I'll transfer to, and have two great options! There's a chance that I may be a on cycling team by the time school starts in August. That thought both terrifies and excites me greatly! This is what I want to do, who I want to be, the thing that I do! But there's so much to learn, experience to gain, and the biggie, fitness to work on. I'm keeping myself motivated by looking at all my dream bikes, the ones that cost more than my car (well, not quite, but some of them are close!) and I can only justify buying if it's paid for by school or I'm using it to pay for school, and admiring my toned and happy legs.
In May I'll have my Associate's Degree! I'll have finally reached the stepping stone in the middle of my educational river! I'm excelling at work, and impressing everyone with what I can do. It's so nice to be recognized and appreciated for doing things that I enjoy!
And Kyle, my love! We're happily going along, working hard to reach our goals, playing hard in our spare time, and taking each second together as a gift. I'm so blessed to have him as my partner in this life. We're getting close to 3 years of marriage, 5 years together. It seems so long, but at the same time, so short.
All in all, I'm feeling 2011...and it's feeling awesome!

School Girl
Kyle kindly bought my beautiful North Face back pack as a birthday present. Said back pack is now loaded down with books and papers that add up to a weight of 2.5 tons.
While I'm ready and excited for this school year, I am sad to see the summer go. It was one of the best yet! So many good people and good things walked into my life. I got to spend my mornings at my park again, drink lots of coffee with Kyle, and have 'soul rejuvenation' times with some amazing people. Tie dye and campfires have been involved in the fun, as well as mountain tops and muddy lakes.
I feel like the summer should be forever after known as the Goodness of 2010.
Give me a couple months and I'll be begging for school to be over, but for now I'm going to charge ahead with all the enthusiasm and positivity that has been built up this summer!

Psy241-201
There are many fragments of memories floating around that I can easily recall, but my first major memory took place a couple weeks after I turned four years old. My little sister Becky and I were taken to a nearby playground for several hours by my paternal grandfather, Papa J. We often visited with him, but he rarely took us places, more often sitting and telling stories about his childhood during the Depression. But this time was different. We swung, slid, shrieked, made piles in the mulch, and climbed through tires. Afterwards, we returned home, where Becky and I were made to stay outside, playing in the yard and eating at the picnic table. The restricting of our entrance to the house was notable enough, but added to the out-of-the ordinary playground visit with Papa J., the day seemed even more extraordinary.
The strange supervision and odd restrictions of the day make it stick out against the fuzzy memories that I have of that age, some of which I’m not sure if I remember through my own experience or through the retelling over the years by parents and other relatives. It wasn’t until later that I realized that that day was the day my little brother was born. I don’t remember so much his entrance into my world, but the events of his birthday are what have stayed with me.
That day is one of the few days that were strictly spent with my grandfather as our caregiver. While playing at playgrounds and around the yard at my house was common enough, the fact that it was supervised primarily by my grandfather made the day special to me. That, combined with the unusual restricted access to the house, which we usually had free-reign of, created a day that stood out against all the other days in my life until that point. Without the trip to the playground or the later restricted entrance, I’m sure that day would have passed into the unmarked, unremembered days of my early years. It’s nice having a point that I can remember and positively equate with a precise point in my childhood.

Flow
“Flow, whether in creative arts, athletic competition, engaging work, or spiritual practice, is a deep and uniquely human motivation to excel, exceed, and triumph over limitation.” (EnlightenNext Magazine)
My textbook then listed some ways to cultivate curiosity and take steps towards a more creative, ‘flowing’ life, based on Csikszentmihalyi’s research.
-Try to be surprised by something everyday
-Try to surprise at least one person everyday (something out of the predictable pattern of your life.)
-Write down what surprises you and how you surprised others
-When something sparks your interest, follow it!
-Wake up each morning with a specfic goal to look forward to
-Spend time in settings that stimulate creativity
I have a happy life, and I have a full life. Work and school amount to being a busy girl! I know that at this stage in my life I am where I should be and pursuing what I’m meant to be. But I still want to improve and grow, and explore. So I’m excited to delve more deeply into Csikszentmihalyi’s writings and thoughts about creativity and living a full and happy life.

Springy
But, all that is past, and while still insanely busy, I am able to trod on, with the end in sight. According to my plan, in Spring 2011 I will graduate with my Associates Degree, and then in the fall, jump back into the cycle of education for my remaining 2-3 years. It is nice having an end of sorts in sight. A large stepping stone in the midst of an enormous river, that allows one to sit, and revel, and rest until starting up and on again.
My contemplative self has returned as well! This is due in part to making time for, and allowing myself to be with my friends. Especially those who challenge and inspire the intellect. It helps dramatically to be surrounded by folk who are positive and uplifting.
One of the questions that we (myself and certain friends) have been pursuing is the question of meaning on the personal level. Why do you do what you do? I'm trying to approach it from a more humanistic perspective. I've seen so many people blindly answer that "God is the reason," using it as an excuse for self-elevation and importance, to callously push their needs "all for God" in front of others. But I want to know why you, that self that resides in that body, rejoices at the idea of doing whatever task or job or craft. Is it that you feel like you've fallen into your puzzle piece in the world, fitting perfectly with those in your environment? Or maybe it's the monetary value that comes from trading hours for monies, and the comfort and security that you've procured. Maybe it's something that you know you can be successful at, and work through the difficult times? I don't know. But I want to know what y'all think!
I've been thinking about why I do what I do. Why Parks and Recreation Management? Why is that I like it? While this may seem trite, I enjoy it. But I know that's not enough. Simply enjoying it won't satisfy the questioning of a hiring committee! So, more reasons are needed! I enjoy being a necessary part of the community and impacting society for the better (hopefully!), I value the availability of parks and green spaces being freely available to all that wish to use them. I see Parks and Recreation as a tool to education and better lives. Fitness and a healthy lifestyle are vital to happy communities, as well as successful educations and development. Parks bring communities together into a public, friendly space. Friendships start, you get a feel for your community, which leads to more civic involvement on the individual level. And that builds into action and involvement on all the levels of a town or city. I think parks can help give people a sense of humanity that gets lost.
Anyway, I could go on. :-) Now to develope all my wee points into a impressive statement!
But, still, why do you do what you do?

2010
but, I'm glad to be back. it's the next step on my path toward being a degree holder and getting back into Parks & Rec. it surprises me how much I miss the park, my park. :-) I love where I am now, but it's not the same. while it's a great fit for me right now, it's not where I plan to be for years, and I want to get back to that place where my investment will pay off greatly.
anyways, this semester I have a lot of electives and only one bad class. the bad class is re-doing the math class I failed this fall. blerg. outside of that tho, I have British Lit II (19th century to present), General Psych, Appalachian Culture, and World Religions. a lot of reading will be involved, but I enjoy it and can knock it out quickly.
we had a good New Year, went to Atlanta for a Black Lips concert. I survived the show without having beer flung on me, being hit in the head with a empty or partially empty beer can, or being spit on, so it was a successful night! Aside from getting second-hand smokers cough. Atlanta is beautiful and I want to go back and spend more time walking and looking up at the buildings (yes, I'm a small town girl). Kyle's GPS was wonderful and make the navigating easy and painless as opposed to: "I think this is your turn!" "are you sure!?" "yes, yes, get over now!" "oops...now what..."
my goals for the new year are to keep my grades high, bike more, and actually do some over night hiking/camping trips. we've decided that we're going to hike the Appalachian Trail at some point, so building and endurance is a priority for this year. it's yet to be decided if we want to thru-hike the trail, or just stick with section hiking. we definately plan on starting with section hiking regardless. i'm excited about it!
i feel a little justified for the months (has it really been months?!) of absence now.
many wishes for love and happiness for you all!

The best things about winter

My favorite is the Spring Onion. I could probably eat about 3 of these a day. You can bowls or pouches. I prefer the bowls, it keeps me from toting a reak bowl around with me everywhere. The best thing tho, is that the soups are made with rice noodles, making them gluten free. While I don't have a gluten allergy, I am sensitive to it at times and this is a tasty way to get pasta without wheat!
2. Emergen-C

Tasty and loaded with good stuff to avoid sickness!
3. Boots. Need I say more? Cozy shoes and socks, to overcome the coldest, muddiest, iciest days.
4. Polenta and cheese. Comfort food FTW!
5. Hats.
For real. I love hats, but in the winter they keep my little short-haired head warm!
6. Hot beverages such as the chocolate, coffee and tea types.
7. Flannel. The best clothing item when the chill takes over!

8. Christmas lights Love them! I have that trashy, tackyness that longs for them year round!
9. Incense I like it more in the winter since Nag Champa especially makes my house smell warm and cozy. And there are other scents like evergreen that are quite festive as well!
10. Movies and computers When it's too cold and nasty to enjoy being outside, it's time for the next best thing: time killing!
11. Alcohol Mm...yes.
I'm sure there's more...but those are the most memorable things.

...
After writing that all out and re-reading, I sound arrogant, don't I? But I don't feel as if that's wrong. I am Laura, completely different and skilled from everyone else in the world. I can do it, and if I want to, I will. [I am woman, hear me roar] The people who see that and value it in me are amazing, and are the most incredible supporters. They feed me confidence and show me my strengths. I love them and admire them for that.
I am blessed to have those people, so very blessed. I was talking with one of them the other day, about how supporting relationships shouldn't be so much about what 'they can do for me' but 'what can I do for them.' Afterwards, thinking about the conversation, I realized that's a mindset, and quality. I've always enjoyed going out and helping people with things--be it compiling information, researching, bringing them little gifts, notes, working/volunteering at events. And I think, as long as I'm able to enjoy being helpful, there will always be someone wise and helpful nearby who sees that, and will have the same attitude towards me.
Let's hope so!

plinks and tinks
i find it strange how cyclical my mood and feelings are. around the 23-25 of the month i feel down and sad. it feels right tho, that those days marking the months in passing are felt in some way, and don't pass blindly by into time.

satisfaction? no!
The feeling that burst to the surface that night had been slowly building. From the insecurities about my job situation, the apprehension of interviewing and learning new habits and tasks, to comprehension and confidence as my job knowledge increased, to a new level of satisfaction and joy in my life.
It almost feels like I've reached what my angsty teenage self longed for all those hormone-filled and mentally exhausting years. I feel...grown up. And it feels great!

i am learning!
I long to accomplish a great and noble tasks, but it is my chief duty to accomplish humble tasks as though they were great and noble. The world is moved along, not only by the mighty shoves of its heroes, but also by the aggregate of the tiny pushes of each honest worker.
Helen Keller
I'm learning more and more that I need structure. A busy, scheduled life in which there are deadlines and responsibilities. Just the thought of this coming school years makes my soul writhe a wee bit and starts to nurture the attitude of "ger! I don't wanna!" just like a 4 or 5 year old when they're forced to eat something revolting to their undeveloped taste buds or to stop playing with toys and friends.
But despite the discomfort of tasks and learning that MUST be accomplished, my time outside of that becomes rather effective and precious! Which I know is a good thing! My house gets cleaned, my mind expands! I actually have things to say and ponder!
I'm learning that it really is the small things that make the differences--a smiled greeting, pleasant tone of voice, putting my stuff away when I get home (Kyle will smile at that, I am trying!), doing tasks in a timely manner, holding the door for that little old lady behind me or even the large middle aged man (but hey, older men like me anyway!), reading for ten minutes instead of frittering away my time on Facebook or Twitter or watching tv, hiking to the top of Big Glassy despite the humidity, and staying within my self governed budget. All these are rolling with me down this life road, accumulating into how I act and what I do. I for one, would rather be nicer than not!
I think this is perhaps why I love the attitude of the Eastern religions. They have the mind set of love and respect, which is sadly lacking from the Western society.
It's a trend that my personal and spiritual growth has been on for the last few years, and the more I see, live, and learn, the more I feel drawn into "love." Not romantic love, but the love that provides courtesy, respect, assistance, advice, and acceptance. But not one that breeds false agreement or support.
I'm a fan of diversity. It's part of what makes this world such an interesting place, and people appealing (who wants to know only one type of person with one set of tastes and opinions? Not I!). But I'll never be one of those people who thinks we all should hold the exact same beliefs.
If a person stays only within the environment into which they were born and raised, how can maturity be achieved? How is understanding gained and knowledge increased? It's not.
I have some friends. While they travel and talk to many different people with many different beliefs, they always hold themselves behind a barrier, not really hearing or relating to the people they're conversing with. Now, what good does that do? Are they too afraid of what may happen if they actually listen and are prompted to wonder or question something in their own life and beliefs?
I've learned it is good to question. Even questioning God. It's what you do with that doubting or questioning that matters. This is how you grow. As babies, we learn to talk, partially in imitation of what we're surrounded by, and later as a means to be understood. Understood so that our questions and entreaties can be responded to. So that we can grow and learn and become reasonable and secure adults. Questions are good. Very good indeed.
So, as I prepare for another school year, I know I have not been mentally stagnant!
Happy Start!

time outside of time
So, I think a recap is in order.
-Hours at my current job (the park) were cut to 15 per week due to county budget cuts.
-I heard back from a front desk/guest services position I had applied for while not knowing if I'd get to keep my park job or not. This is a full time, 3pm-11pm position, complete with benefits (yay!) at an inn in the area. They're a "green hotel" and even have a large organic garden on the property for their restaurant! I interviewed and was offered the job a week later! I've already started training and I'm loving it!
-The plan for now is to continue at the park and start at the inn. I'll probably have to cut way back on time at the park (not like it's really high anyway) once school starts on Aug 20th.
-Saturday two friends of mine were married in a small ceremony on top of one of my favorite mountains on the Parkway! It was beautiful and sweet. Small and easy! I had the honor of playing photographer. It was a great morning!
-Saturday afternoon and Sunday Kyle and I got some hiking and scenery in. Sunday I took my camera and had a blast crawling around in the grass photographing flowers and anything that struck my fancy. Kyle got some time to visit with his brother while I occupied myself.
There's definitely a singular feeling that I get while behind my camera, squinting thru my viewfinder, twisting and contorting to get the right angle and then adjusting aperture and exposure settings. It's a strange place where time stands still, and yet there's a strong urgency. There's really nothing else in this world than me, my camera, and whatever I see and try to photograph.
Then there's the trickling hints that I've got it, I'm doing good, that explodes into satisfaction that only comes when I see my images in full size! It's that "I DID IT!" elation! Ah yes. I love my camera. :-)
-Hopefully sometime within the next month or so, Kyle and I shall be aquirring this:

Hee hee hee. That's a 2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder. The 'MR' stands for Midship Runabout which appeals to my trekie side. Isn't that sad? I'm in love with a car partially b/c it could be trekie-ish.

Ah so. That's about all in the life o'Laura right now. It's crammed packed with working and playing and sleeping. :-)
Arg!
